We have always taken a pride in our history, long before the opening of the museum. In the 1950s the Cariboo Historical Society was formed to document and preserve the past, and by 1963 they had assembled enough material to open a museum. A half century later our museum has expanded to three galleries of professionally curated exhibits plus extensive archives.

A few highlights:

  1. Nek'oh Tse K'ut/Footprints in Stone, dedicated to our local First Nations culture
  2. Vignettes recreating Quesnel's pioneer homes, businesses and industries
  3. Photography from C.D. Hoy and C.S. Wing
  4. "Mandy" the Haunted Doll
  5. Video installations with Chinese and First Nation Elders and or Sikh community telling their own stories
  6. Titanic exhibit

Bring your smart phone (or ask to borrow a tablet) to explore the supplementary material delivered via QR Codes. Listen to Alice Earley, Quesnel's first school teacher, recount her journey to Quesnel by stage coach in 1884, or watch a trailer to understand how our linotype machine operated. You can also hunt for items belonging to Dr. Baker or Mr. Hoy, both prominent individuals of our history here.

One of the pleasures of touring the museum is the number items on display from all eras. Every visitor is sure to find something that evokes nostalgic memories except the very youngest, who will enjoy the activity centre with its dress-up trunk, colouring sheets, scavenger or clue hunts.

The Museum is located in LeBourdais Park just off Highway 97 in Downtown Quesnel. The Quesnel Visitor Centre is conveniently located in the same building, with information on other popular community attractions.

The Museum is open daily, 9:30 am - 5:00 pm from May 24th to September 4th. Contact the Museum to book appointments year-round. You will find more information about Quesnel's history and archival resources at the Museum website.
