Description / Notes

Between 1862 and 1870, thousands of people travelled the Cariboo Wagon Road to Barkerville. During this gold rush era, Barkerville was the largest city west of Chicago and north of San Francisco. Today, it's one of the largest heritage sites in Western North America. Barkerville is a living history museum with over 125 heritage buildings, stagecoach rides, live theatre, guided tours, demonstrations and costumed interpretive staff. Barkerville hosts the Canadian National Gold Panning Championships each August. Between the first and last snowfalls, cross-country skiers, snowshoers and snowmobilers come to enjoy the deep snow and countryside. In 2016, Barkerville opened the Shamrock Tube Run and skating rink, where visitors can rent skates, snowshoes and kicksleds, or visit the cafe and gift store! Barkerville is located 81 kilometres east of Quesnel at the end of Highway 26. There are many unique points of interest along the way such as Cottonwood House, the District of Wells and old ghost towns. Pick up a guide book at the Quesnel Visitor Centre located in downtown Quesnel. For more information on hours, attractions and prices, visit the Barkerville Historic Town website.
